Departmental Senior Student Advice Team

There’s lots of support available to you. Appointments are available online and in-person.

Our Departmental Senior Student Advisers are your dedicated point of contact within your department, offering tailored support throughout your time at LSE. Working alongside your Academic Mentor and other departmental staff, we help you navigate the wide range of advice and wellbeing services available, ensuring you feel supported both academically and personally.

How your DSSA can support you

University can be challenging, and unexpected things can happen. When that happens, we’re here to listen non-judgementally, provide advice and help you access any support you need.

Up to 30 mins appointments are available in-person and online for several departments – click here to meet your adviser.

Meet with your DSSA

What the team does:

  • Be a friendly point of contact in your department if you ever need someone to talk to. 
  • Help you connect with the right support for any non-academic concerns, whether it’s personal, practical, or just something you’re unsure about. 
  • Guide you through the range of support services at LSE and beyond. 
  • Work with you to ensure you can fully engage with all aspects of life at LSE.
  • Advise you on what to do if you're facing difficulties with an upcoming assessment – including Extensions, Deferrals and Exceptional Circumstances.  
  • Support you in understanding your options if you need to make a change to your studies – including Programme TransferInterruption and Withdrawal.

We can't support you with:

  • Academic queries including course selection, teaching, assessments and feedback – you will need to contact your department for assistance. 
  • Visa and immigration advice – you must contact the  Student Advice and Engagement Team for all visa and immigration queries.
  • Careers advice – you can access extensive support from LSE Careers

Information for staff

The Departmental Senior Student Advisers are a point of contact to all undergraduate and postgraduate taught students based in the Department, offering professional and pastoral help and guidance if they are experiencing challenges or need support. This includes regular office hours and drop-ins, and complements the work of Academic Mentors, Department Tutors/Programme Directors and Programmes Team. 

Referring students to your DSSA

  • Use the subject title ‘Student referral (name of dept)’
  • In the body of the email, provide the students name, Id number and the reason you are referring them (include as much detail as possible)
  • Please also confirm that the student knows you’re referring them to the adviser
