Food and drink

There is a diverse range of catering facilities on the School campus offering food and drink for all tastes, dietary needs and budgets. Please discuss your requirements with the duty manager if you have allergies, a religious or lifestyle diet.


Wherever you decide to eat, please think about reducing the amount of packaging from take-aways and use the communal recycling stations provided around campus to dispose of the packaging and food waste.

Please note: the opening times listed below are for term time. Please see the Catering Services web pages for any amendments to these times during vacations.

Renowned for its daily changing international dishes, vegetarian options, great salad bar, street food options fries and pizzas. Spacious and bustling with access to the roof terrace seating area. 

The Bean Counter (LSE)

Contemporary café offering speciality hot and cold drinks, including freshly squeezed juices and made to order smoothies. Food options include freshly made sandwiches on artisan breads and delicious salads, a selection of tasty hot snacks and pastries, fresh fruit and yogurt pots and tempting cookies and cakes.  

Beveridge Café

Barista handmade quality triple-certified coffees and teas, with exciting healthy freshly made salads and snacks, cold drinks and fresh bakery products.  Use of KeepCups encouraged.


Cafe 54 (LSE)

Open to everyone, all year round this is the ideal place to “grab and go” from a wide selection of hot and cold drinks, sandwiches and salads, hot snacks and light meals.

The Denning Learning Cafe (SU)

Offers a relaxed environment where students can pick up a coffee, sandwich and selection of cakes and pastries. It has a broad menu of hot and cold food, including pizzas, jacket potatoes and pies.  Seating for approximately 150 people.

Visit Downstairs in the Garrick to kick start your day with one of our superb, cooked to order breakfasts. At lunchtime enjoy delicious quality home cooked meals and special salads.

Located on the corner of Portsmouth Street, Coopers houses a restaurant with full table service and a wine bar

Boasting two outdoor terraces, an open kitchen and a wood fired oven, the modern wood-clad restaurant is the perfect spot to enjoy a relaxed lunch of freshly baked pizzas and salads.  LSE staff and students can enjoy a 25% discount on food.

Ye Old White Horse

Opening times: Monday – Friday, 11am – 11pm (food served 12 noon – 8pm); Saturday, 12 noon – 11pm, Sunday, 12 noon - 8pm

Owned by LSE but independently operated, Ye Old White Horse is an intimate pub in keeping with the history of the area where all are welcome.

Where to eat your own food

  • Students' Salon, King's Chambers - currently closed
  • Saw Swee Hock Student Centre 2nd floor, outside Faith Centre (microwave facility available).
  • UG common room, 4th floor, Old Building (microwave and boiling water facility available).
  • Roof terraces, 2nd and 6th floor, Centre Building; 4th floor, Old Building; 8th floor, New Academic Building and 6th floor Saw Swee Hock Student Centre (when not reserved for functions). 
  • Escape Social Space in the Library foyer (cold and pre-packaged food only).  Please note eating is not permitted in the rest of the Library.  
  • Centre Building ground, 1st and 2nd floors.
  • 32 Lincoln’s Inn Fields basement, ground and lower ground break out spaces.
  • New Academic Building Plaza; Atrium (cold and pre-packaged food only); lower ground lobby (occasionally closed for private School events); first and second floor mezzanine and communal areas.

Sustainable catering

LSE Catering have demonstrated their commitment to providing sustainable and healthy food in the Environmental, Sustainable and Healthy Food Policy and Targets

In summer 2018, they received the maximum award of Three Stars from the Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA), for all four LSE Catered Halls and LSE campus restaurants. This is an improvement from 2016 when Two Stars was awarded.

The Fourth Floor Restaurant in the Old Building hold regular events, Feel Good Food Days, to raise awareness about the environmental impact of the food we eat. Customers are offered extra vegetarian options, and a meat reduced menu.
