You can access provisional marks in Student LfY. Head to the My assessments section and then the Provisional marks tab. You can view results on a computer, tablet or mobile device.
The information on the screen should be self-explanatory but the sections below provide information to help you understand the status of these marks, what the letters and numbers mean and provide answers to some common questions.
When will provisional marks be available?
Students following taught postgraduate programmes that are due receive their final results on Tuesday 18 November 2025 will be able to access provisional marks in Student LfY on Thursday 7 August 2025.
What is the status of provisional marks?
The information contained within your provisional marks emails is subject to change. We share provisional marks to allow you to prepare for your next steps, either at LSE or elsewhere. However, sharing marks at this stage means they have not been ratified by the relevant exam boards and can therefore change. The information displayed on the provisional marks screen is not an official record, they are primarily for your reference only.
In certain circumstances we can confirm provisional marks to third parties. We cannot accept responsibility for any issues arising from changes to provisional marks. It is not possible for the Student Services Centre to discuss provisional marks. You cannot appeal against provisional marks or request an administrative mark check for them.
How do I see provisional marks for individual assessments?
If you are using a larger screen you can access provisional individual assessment marks by clicking the 'Show Assessments' button to the right hand side. You can hide assessment level marks in the same way. On a mobile device the button appears as a down / up chevron.
Overall course level marks and grades
Where we have a full set of marks available for a given course the screen will also show an overall mark and overall grade. You can interpret the grades using the list below:
DI = Distinction
M = Merit
P = Pass
Fail = Fail
Bad Fail = Bad Fail
Deferred assessments
If you have deferred an assessment then it will show with a status of Deferred. The overall grade for the course will also show with no overall mark, and an overall grade of Deferred. Visit when will I take my deferred assessment to find out when you will sit deferred assessments.
Absences
If you were absent from an assessment then it will show with a status of Absent. The overall mark for the course will be set at zero. If you were absent from all the assessments in the course it will show with a grade of Absent. If you were absent from at least one component of assessment but have completed others the course will have a grade of Incomplete.
Missing marks
If an assessment does not show this means the mark has not yet been received by the Student Services Centre and thus cannot be published. If there is one or more assessment marks missing then we cannot calculate an overcall course level mark or grade. If no marks have are available within a course then that course will not show at all.
For some courses / assessments (particularly dissertations, capstone projects and similar) this will be because marking is ongoing. This is perfectly normal; marks for these type of courses would never normally be available at this time of year and are only published in November.
Exceptional circumstances and mark changes
Provisional marks are published before the Exam Boards have completed their work. This means that Exceptional Circumstances will not have been considered yet. You will need to wait until final results are published on 18 November to find out the outcome of your Exceptional Circumstances submission.
Similarly, if you already know that a mark will be changed this will not necessarily show in your provisional marks email because it may need to be ratified by the exam board. Again, you will need to wait until final results are published on 18 November.
If things have not gone to plan
Check out the LSE Student Support Map for details of the different types of support available at LSE. We understand that getting unexpected results may be a worrying experience, if you need emotional or wellbeing support you can access LSE's wellbeing resources or contact your doctor. What happens next will depend on a number of factors such as whether there are other assessments in the course and how many attempts you have remaining. Your Academic Mentor will be able to guide you through what happens next.
It is not possible for the Student Services Centre to discuss provisional marks. You cannot appeal against provisional marks or request an administrative mark check for them.
Confirming provisional marks to third parties
In certain circumstances, your home department may be able to send a letter outlining provisional marks to a third party.
These letters will only show overall provisional marks and grades, so it will only include courses where all the provisional assessment marks are available and an overall provisional mark and grade has been calculated. The letter can only be sent directly to a potential employer or education institution and only at your request; you must request the letter and you will not be sent a copy.
To request a letter please contact the relevant person in your academic department, (usually this is your Programme Manager or Programme Administrator). You will need to provide them with the contact details of the person that you would like the letter to be sent to.
Questions about your provisional marks
If you have any queries about a mark please contact the academic department responsible for teaching the course.
