LSE Manager Forum: Demystifying Disability in the Workplace

Monthly forums for line managers exploring best practice in supporting and providing adjustments for disabled staff.

"Sharing experiences, tips and good practice in  supporting disabled staff."

Do you have line management responsibilities at LSE? Are you involved in providing adjustments for disabled staff at the School? If so, please join us for the new series of LSE Manager Forums: Demystifying Disability in the Workplace, hosted by Lucy Mu, the new Staff Disability and Mental Health Adviser, and supported by the HR Partnering Team.

These forums are for LSE managers to come and share their experiences, tips and good practice in relation to supporting disabled staff, as well as discussing the challenges associated with navigating related systems and processes such as Occupational Health and Access to Work.

The sessions will start with a brief introduction to the theme, as well as signposting to relevant support and resources.  You are welcome to join for as long as you want, to listen in, ask questions, or join a discussion to talk through any specific challenges or positive experiences.

Themes attributed to each session will provide a focus for discussion and managers are encouraged to bring any themes they would like to discuss in relation to supporting and making adjustments for their staff. The aim is to be as flexible as possible to the needs of attendees. The sessions will also offer a chance to work through case studies in depth to help cement learning.

Please register your interest in attending any of these sessions by contacting Lucy Mu via l.h.mu@lse.ac.uk for further information.

Wednesday 5 November 2025 2pm to 4pm - Reasonable Adjustments

This interactive workshop will help line managers feel more confident and informed when discussing and implementing reasonable adjustments in the workplace. We’ll explore what “reasonable adjustments” mean in practice, the legal and organisational context, and the key role managers play in supporting staff effectively.

The session includes:

  • A presentation covering policy, process, and good practice around workplace adjustments
  • Case study discussions based on real scenarios to develop practical problem-solving skills
  • Space to share experiences, ask questions, and build confidence in having supportive conversations

By the end of the workshop, line managers will have a clearer understanding of how to identify, agree, and review reasonable adjustments, and where to access further support from HR and specialist services.

Wednesday 11 February 2026 2pm to 4pm - Mental Health

This interactive workshop will help line managers feel more confident and informed when supporting team members experiencing mental health challenges - whether it’s a first-time episode or part of a longer-term condition. We’ll explore how to recognise early signs that someone may be struggling, have supportive and appropriate conversations, and create a psychologically safe and inclusive team environment.

The session includes:

  • A presentation covering mental health awareness, a line manager’s role, and key support pathways

  • Case study discussions based on real scenarios to build confidence in having sensitive conversations and offering support

  • Space to share experiences, ask questions, and learn practical strategies to promote wellbeing at work

By the end of the workshop, line managers will have a clearer understanding of how to support staff experiencing mental health difficulties, when and how to seek additional advice, and how to foster a culture where people feel safe to talk about their wellbeing.

Monday 23 March 2026 2pm to 4pm - Neurodiversity in the Workplace

This interactive workshop will help line managers feel more confident and informed when supporting neurodivergent colleagues - including those with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, and other forms of neurodiversity. We’ll explore what neurodiversity means in the workplace, how to recognise and value different ways of thinking and working, and how to create inclusive environments that enable everyone to thrive.

The session includes:

  • A presentation covering key concepts, organisational responsibilities, and examples of good practice in supporting neurodivergent staff

  • Case study discussions based on real scenarios to develop confidence in identifying and implementing appropriate support and adjustments

  • Space to share experiences, ask questions, and learn practical ways to build inclusive, strengths-based teams.

By the end of the workshop, line managers will have a clearer understanding of how to support neurodivergent colleagues, make effective workplace adjustments, and promote a culture that celebrates difference and empowers individuals to perform at their best.
