PhD Academy provides a number of opportunities for professional development and networking that complements the support students receive from their supervisors at the departmental level. The PhD Academy offers an academic and professional development programme and a series of short courses.

Academic Mentoring: apply to be part of the academic mentoring community

Academic Mentoring at LSE is focused on building scholarly partnerships based on shared purpose and understanding. Academic mentors are students’ first point of contact with the academic community, and it is a positive and worthwhile relationship for both academics and students.

Access to LSE Library Collections: find resources

LSE Library provides access to the resources you need for your studies, including books, journal articles, databases, news and more. These are available in print and online formats.

Change Makers: apply to the Change Maker programme

The programme involves student researchers identifying a particular aspect of LSE to investigate. The students then plan and carry out a small-scale research project with funding and support from LSE. At the end of the project, Change Makers present their findings to LSE senior leadership.

Coding and Data Challenges: get involved in student competitions

Throughout the year, the Digital Skills Lab offers students opportunities to work and compete in teams, solving real-world digital challenges set by employers and academics.

Drop-In Sessions: find help and support

The Digital Skills Lab runs drop-in sessions via Teams to help students find the digital solution that is right for them; get support with online digital skills learning; or to get answers to specific questions about using digital tools.

English for Academic Purposes (In-sessional Support)

The LSE Language Centre offers students an opportunity to improve and practise English for students who do not have English as a first language. We offer ways to improve and practise using the English language for academic work with online courses, workshops and one-to-one support.

English for Academic Purposes (Pre-sessional Programmes)

The LSE Language Centre offers pre-sessional courses to ensure that students are well prepared for their studies. Passing the LSE Language Test is one way of fulfilling the English language requirement for graduate study at LSE.

English for Academic Purposes (PhD Academy): find out about studying English through Moodle courses

English support is available for PhD students at LSE. Support includes a thesis writing course, academic English workshops and one-to-one consultations. There is a range of English courses available on Moodle requiring an LSE login.

The PhD Academy offers a range of academic and professional development courses and coaching sessions. This is alongside workshops, training and events. All of the training meets the four main domains of the Research Development Framework.

Guidance and Regulations: find guidance documents and forms

The PhD Academy has an online directory where students can find guidance documents and forms relating to the PhD Academys activities. Students can submit an enquiry if they cannot find what they need.

Language Community: get involved with volunteering

The LSE Language Centre hosts opportunities to volunteer, exchange and practise languages outside of the more formal programmes of study. Tandem learning; conversation circles and improvisation sessions are offered and the Language Gateway also hosts online resources and skills for independent study

Language Specialism: find out about studying a language with your degree

On many BSc programmes there is an opportunity to receive a language specialism attached to an undergraduate degree. Degree certificates which include a language specialism will state the language in the title, for example: BSc in International Relations (with French).

LSE Events: attend public lectures and public events

LSE hosts a public lecture programme featuring over 200 events each year, where some of the most influential figures in the social sciences can be heard. The vast majority of events are free to attend, including those which require a ticket. Students are welcome to attend.

LSE Festival: attend a week-long series of events

LSE Festival explores how social sciences can be used to shape a better world, alongside the practical steps needed to make big ideas a reality. Global leaders, innovators and change-makers discuss the big issues. LSE Festival includes keynote speakers, panel discussions, film screenings, and events

LSE GROUPS: find out about this unique student learning experience

Students spend the last two weeks of Summer Term working intensively in small groups, of mixed years and disciplines, with a supervisor. They choose a research question and methodology, collect and analyse data, and write and present a paper at a final conference.

LSE100: take the LSE course

LSE100 is a flagship interdisciplinary course at LSE taken by all first-year undergraduates, giving you the opportunity to explore transformative global challenges in collaboration with your peers and leading academics from across LSE. Students develop skills to help them solve complex problems.

Methodology Training: attend specialist training in advanced methods

The Department of Methodology at LSE provides specialist training in advanced qualitative and quantitative methods. Training is geared towards doctoral students and doctoral students are welcome to attend any of the department’s courses.

The Digital Skills Lab offers free access on Moodle to self-paced online learning courses in AI, Python, R and more. There is also free access available to students looking for support with their studies.

Student Academic Mentor (SAM) Programme: apply to become or find a Student Academic Mentor

SAM is a peer-to-peer mentoring programme for undergraduate students, delivered in collaboration with academic departments. The aim is for second- and third-year undergraduate mentors to help new students to make the most of LSE, access the right support resources and settle into life at LSE.

The LSE Language Centre offers a range of modern language, literature and linguistics options that undergraduate students can take as part of a BA or BSc programme. Students can receive a language specialism attached to their degree certificate and transcript.
