Your provisional marks

Interpreting the information

Provisional marks have not been confirmed by the relevant Exam Boards and thus may change.

Prospectus_May_2014_0941_800x450_16-9_sRGBe

You can access provisional marks in Student LfY. Head to the My assessments section and then the Provisional marks tab. You can view results on a computer, tablet or mobile device.

The information on the screen should be self-explanatory but the sections below will help you understand the status of provisional marks, explain what the letters and numbers mean, and provide answers to some common questions.

When will provisional marks be available and what will be included?

Provisional marks will be released on Thursday 5 March 2026. You will get an email when your marks are available to view.

Which marks are included in the release depends on your level of study, expand the section below to find out what you should expect to see.

What is the status of provisional marks?

Provisional marks are not an official record, they are primarily for your reference only.

The information shown on the provisional marks screen is subject to change. We share provisional marks early to allow you to prepare for your next steps. However, releasing marks early means they have not yet been ratified by the relevant exam boards and can therefore change.

In some circumstances we can confirm provisional marks to third partiesWe cannot however accept responsibility for any issues arising from changes to provisional marks.

You cannot appeal against provisional marks or request an administrative mark check for them.

How do I see provisional marks for individual assessments?

If you are using a larger screen you can access assessment marks by clicking the 'Show Assessments' button to the right hand side. You can hide assessment level marks in the same way. On a mobile device the button appears as a down / up chevron.

Which provisional assessment marks will be shown on the screen?

You will be able to see assessment level marks for all in-person exams that took place between Wednesday 7 January and Friday 16 January 2026, this includes both traditional hand-written exams and e-exams

You may also be able to see provisional marks for some other assessments. The screen will show marks for other Autumn Term assessments only if they have been  through the relevant processes and uploaded into the Student Records System. Not all Autumn Term assessment marks will show, this is normal, marks not shown will not yet be ready for release.

Course level marks

Where we have all the provisional assessment marks for a given course we will also display a provisional overall course level mark and grade for that course. You can interpret course grades using the list below:

1 = First class  [70-100%]
2A = Upper Second class [60-69%]
2B = Lower Second class [50-59%]
3 = Third [40-49%]
Fail [0-39%]

If we do not have all the assessment marks for a course then we cannot calculate overall marks or grades. For example if a course is assessed by just a January exam then the screen will display a provisional course mark and grade too. If the course has an exam and an essay, and both were released, we'll combine them and display a provisional course mark and grade. However, if only the exam mark was released we won't be able to calculate or display a course mark or grade.

Deferred assessments

If you deferred an assessment then Deferred will appear next to the assessment. Visit  when will I take my deferred assessment to find out when you will sit deferred assessments.

Absences

If you were absent from an assessment then Absent will appear next to the assessment. Visit re-entry for information about when you will sit these assessments.

Banked marks

The screen will show any marks that have been 'banked' from previous years. For example, if you passed a January exam in a course last year, but are re-sitting another assessment in the same course this year (even if that mark has not been released) the January exam mark from last year will show because it has been 'banked'.

Exceptional circumstances

Provisional marks are published before the Exam Boards have completed their work. This means that Exceptional Circumstances will not have been considered yet. You will need to wait until final results are published on Friday 17 July to find out the outcome of your Exceptional Circumstances submission.

Check out the LSE Student Support Map for details of the different types of support available at LSE. We understand that getting unexpected results may be a worrying experience, if you need emotional or wellbeing support you can access LSE's wellbeing resources or contact your doctor.

You cannot appeal against provisional marks or request an administrative mark check for them. Visit Challenging Results to find information about how and when you can appeal or request an administrative mark check.

Confirming provisional marks to third parties

In certain circumstances, your home department may be able to send a letter outlining provisional course level marks to a third party.

These letters only show course level provisional marks, so they can only include courses where all the provisional assessment marks are available and an overall provisional mark has been calculated. The letter can only be sent directly to a potential employer or education institution and only at your request; you must request the letter and you will not be sent a copy.

To request a letter please contact the relevant person in your academic department, (usually this is your Programme Manager or Programme Administrator). You will need to provide them with the contact details of the person that you would like the letter to be sent to.
