MRes students in the taught phase of their programme (who have yet to upgrade)
Pre-upgrade, MRes students are governed by the regulations for Masters programmes and you should read the information in the section above.
How do I see provisional marks for individual assessments?
If you are using a larger screen you can access assessment marks by clicking the 'Show Assessments' button to the right hand side. You can hide assessment level marks in the same way. On a mobile device the button appears as a down / up chevron.
Which provisional assessment marks will be shown on the screen?
You will be able to see assessment level marks for all in-person exams that took place between Wednesday 7 January and Friday 16 January 2026, this includes both traditional hand-written exams and e-exams.
You may also be able to see provisional marks for some other assessments. The screen will show marks for other Autumn Term assessments only if they have been through the relevant processes and uploaded into the Student Records System. Not all Autumn Term assessment marks will show, this is normal, marks not shown will not yet be ready for release.
If you are taking resit or deferred assessments for postgraduate level courses as part of RDAP1 you will not receive provisional marks. Final Results for RDAP1 assessments will be published on Thursday 19 March 2026.
Course level marks
Where we have all the provisional assessment marks for a given course we will also display a provisional overall course level mark and grade for that course. You can interpret course grades using the list below:
D = Distinction [70-100%]
M = Merit [60-69%]
P = Pass [50-59%]
Fail [(x+1)-49%]
Bad Fail [0 - x]
You can check the bad fail marks for your courses (i.e. establish what x is).
If we do not have all the assessment marks then we cannot calculate course marks or grades. For example if a course is assessment by just a January exam then the screen will display a provisional course mark and grade too. If the course has an exam and an essay, and both were released, we'll combine them and display a provisional course mark and grade. However, if only the exam mark was released we won't be able to calculate or display a course mark or grade.
Deferred assessments
If you deferred an assessment then Deferred will appear next to the assessment. Visit when will I take my deferred assessment to find out when you will sit deferred assessments.
Absences
If you were absent from an assessment then Absent will appear next to the assessment. Visit re-entry for information about when you will sit these assessments.
If things have not gone to plan
Check out the LSE Student Support Map for details of the different types of support available at LSE. We understand that getting unexpected results may be a worrying experience, if you need emotional or wellbeing support you can access LSE's wellbeing resources or contact your doctor.
What happens next will depend on a number of factors such as whether there are other assessments in the course and how many attempts you have remaining. Your supervisor, departmental staff or the PhD Academy will be able to guide you on what happens next.
You cannot appeal against provisional marks or request an administrative mark check for them. Visit Challenging Results to find information about how and when you can appeal or request an administrative mark check.
Questions about your provisional marks
It is not possible for the PhD Academy or the Student Services Centre to discuss provisional marks.
If you have queries about a mark please contact the academic department responsible for teaching the course.
If you'd like to know why a provisional mark for an assessment other than an in-person exam, has not been included in this release you can contact the academic department responsible for teaching the course. However, please remember that it's normal for only some assessments to show, the others are not yet be ready to be uploaded into the student records system and thus cannot be released. We can only publish overall course level marks and grades once we have a full set of assessment level marks.
